There are a number of different skills that you need to have if you’re going to prepare yourself for the worst-case scenario. One of those skills is knot tying, but not just any knots. You need to tie some of the most effective knots that you can use for different situations. One of those all-around knots is the hangman’s noose, which will help you with a number of different tasks while you’re on your own.
Step One
The first step is to take your rope and make a flat 8, without the rope crossing over itself. You would point one end of the rope downward and then double it back upward then down again so that the ends of the rope are facing in opposite directions.
Step Two
Take the end of the rope that is pointing down and bring it behind the loop at the bottom. Wrap it around the center of the rope, wrapping around all of the pieces. You want to make a single tight wrap all the way around to hold the rope together.
Step Three
Take the same end of the rope and wrap it three more times around the joined rope. You should have a loop still sticking out of the top of the rope once you complete these three wraps around. You will then follow this up by wrapping it three more times around, still leaving that loop visible at the very top, though it should be small now.
Step Four
Take the end of the rope you’ve been wrapping and pass it through the loop that’s left at the top. You want to hold the large loop at the bottom of your wraps and pull the rope through the small loop as tightly as you can. This will finish off the top of the knot.
It’s very important to be careful with this type of knot as it can be used for negative purposes as well. On the other hand, there are plenty of positive ways that you can use a hangman’s noose. It’s important to be aware of what you’re doing with this knot and where it’s being used at all times. While the knot itself is secure and sturdy, it’s designed for the knot to slide down to tighten the loop at the bottom of the rope. This makes it extremely dangerous around pets and children who could be injured.
If you do need a knot for things like tying down boats and tents or for tying fishing hooks on your line this is a great option. Because it’s tight and it tightens down it works very well for keeping anything together. It’s also a great option for lanyards and bracelets that are made out of paracord. If you’re going to be out on your own in the wilderness this knot can be used for hanging items out of the way or in trees and also helps you with a variety of other tasks you may need within your camp.
